Sad Puppy

I saw this and instantly sympathized with this dogs feelings. Anyone can recognize the sadness in this photo, which is why this is such an effective visual. This poor basset hound has some reason to be upset, and the picture could be related to a failing company, a recall of a popular product, or any other upsetting news. This little basset hound has something to be sad about for sure, but he can be happy knowing we all feel for him.

To me the picture depicted a regular dog. The expression on the dog face is normal as that is how their face is shaped. How can we tell when they are actually sad?
Maybe since the picture was zoomed in to the dog made it look more saddening but also if zoomed out the picture might be of the dog and his house.
